WILLIAM ANSLOW THORNLEY fl.1858-1898 A very good and well sized oil depicting shipping off the coast . The artist’s work is highly sought after and this is an excellent example, full of activity. Title: Shipping Off the Coast Signature: signed lower left Medium: Oil on original canvas Condition: Unlined, one repair verso Size: 10 x 18” unframed William Thornley was a painter of coastal scenes whose work is very similar to Hubert and Charles Thornley, who may have been members of the same family. He painted scenes of genre, architecture and landscapes as well. A number of the landscapes were of Belgium, Holland Italy and Norway. However it is for his landscapes that he is best remembered.
